Xo'ja Zayniddin

On our fifth day of practice, we visited to Xo'ja Zayniddin Mosque with my group. We had been for three hours in that place talking about its history, location as well as several interesting facts. Although it is not very big monument, it holds a great number of mysteries in it.

The Xoja Zayniddin Mosque is a notable 16th-century mosque located in the historic center of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Situated between Hoja Nurabad and Islamov streets, near the Ark Fortress, it is renowned for its impressive architecture and historical significance. The mosque was established by Xoja Zayniddin (1465–1480), who served as the chief qadi (judge) of Bukhara. It was constructed during the reign of Imam al-Bukhari in honor of the revered Islamic scholar. The mosque is situated near one of Bukhara's oldest pools, adding to its historical context.

The mosque is celebrated for its aivan (arched hall), showcasing some of the finest examples of mosaic and ganch (plasterwork) in the region. These intricate decorations highlight the craftsmanship of the era and contribute to the mosque's architectural charm. Located in the heart of Bukhara, the mosque is easily accessible for visitors exploring the city's rich Islamic heritage. Its proximity to other historical sites, such as the Ark Fortress, makes it a valuable stop for those interested in Central Asian history and architecture.

Prayer Hall: The mosque's central prayer hall is a spacious domed chamber measuring 9.5 × 9.4 meters, with a dome rising 16 meters overhead and a diameter of 8.2 meters. The hall is supported by a chahar taq (four-arch) structure, a feature introduced to Central Asia in the late 15th century.
Muqarnas Vaulting: The main entrance and qibla wall are adorned with muqarnas vaulting, a form of stalactite-like ornamentation. The dome itself features four rows of muqarnas around its perimeter, with 32 ribs spanning tangentially to an inner circle surrounding the dome's apex.
Portico and Columns: The mosque is encircled by a portico supported by wooden columns with intricate star-like patterns on their ceilings. This design element is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the era.

To sum up, today’s trip was truly enjoyable and filled with unforgettable moments. Although I had visited this monument before, this time felt more special and engaging because I shared the experience with my wonderful groupmates. Spending time together and having meaningful discussions with them is something I truly cherish.
